i had a good conversation the other night and it made me realize how much i miss them. During your teenage years and into your early 20's in college good conversations are the norm. They seem to just happen at almost any time. Sitting around the cafeteria, late nights in coffee shops or bars, any car ride lasting more than 10 minutes.
God, atoms, sex, parents, the true meaning of cartoons, music; anything and everything could be put out on the table. No judgements, no attempts to persuade, just folks trying to work things out. Using companions as sounding boards.
Somewhere along the path of adulthood people become less and less likely to participate in such conversations. Maybe it's because as people age they become less and less idealistic. Maybe its because people get too bogged down with the daily grind of their adult life. Maybe, but most likely not.
i feel the real reason is because as people age they grow weary of showing their humanness. Adults harbor the delusion that they need to always know everything, need to always be in control. Part of being a human being is not knowing everything (or anything at times). Not always knowing the answer or what's going to happen is what makes us us.
Maybe that's why i enjoy music and art so much. They are a pure outpouring of our humanness. Maybe that's why so many people in their adult years buy significantly less music. Maybe they don't want to be reminded of that human frailty and want to keep up the act that they have it all figured out. Maybe they are afraid to say the wrong thing. There is no wrong thing.
Have a good conversation. Show that human side again. Acknowledge that you don't know everything. Let the world know what you believe.
Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers said "the best that I can ever be is just like you a human being".

More Than Just Marking Time
Chalk it up to contemplative birthday thoughts but i believe i've lived in a pretty interesting time... Interesting underground music which eventually saw some recognition for a period of time in the 90's... Skateboarders now getting their own shows (Rob & Big) while others skaters are succeeding in the profession of acting (My Name Is Earl)... Entire music collections easily carried around...
...Have lived during an amazing (and possibly one of the last properly selected) Dalia Lamas... Have seen a successful Republic of Ireland and the closest thing to a united Ireland in quite some time, if ever...
...May see a major shift in the Earth's systems (interesting as a scientist, scary as a human being)...
... i could go on and on but it's important to remember some of the things that make this time, and my generation, an interesting and fortunate time to be alive. With so many things seeming to be clearly wrong with the world today it is more crucial now than ever to remind ourselves (or myself at least) of the things that i have been able to experience in my time here that are positive in nature. There never has been a perfect time, despite what history books may try to have you believe. This time seems to fit me about as good as any time could.

70%
There are a lot of idiots in the world... and most of them drive pick-up trucks.
(if you are too old to have been able to load a pick-up truck bed for at least a decade now why do you need a shiny new pick-up big enough to carry an average sized sedan?... oh yeah, small penis... i forgot)

Sink Pig
What people think they need and what people actually need are two very different things. Recently it came to my attention that they make kitchen sink garbage disposals that automatically reverse direction when there is a jam to 'unclog' themselves. What the fuck are Americans putting down there kitchen sinks that require such a sophisticated and powerful disposal system?
All that comes to mind is the wood chipper scene from the movie "Fargo". i see some soccer mom with a red and white checkered apron on and perfectly shaped hair standing by the disposal switch with a foot sticking up out of the sink.
i could get into the environmental problems associated with putting many of the things people do into our sewage systems but i shall refrain. i don't want to end up chopped to pieces in some nutbag's kitchen sink.
