i just watched a movie that i haven't seen in quite some time, and boy did i enjoy it. Disney (yes Disney) that company that brought you such trash as "Pocahontas", "The Little Mermaid", and overseas child labor made a movie in the 80's called "TRON". i don't know if it was the amazing success of Star Wars or if someone down there was doing mountains of coke, but somehow this movie got made and i for one am glad it did. Some very happy computer geek was on the receiving end of that fateful 'OK'.
As a kid i enjoyed the idea of being inside a video game. How cool is that? Those light up outfits with the glowing hockey helmets, those crazy closed in motorcycles, and Frisbees, yes - glowing Frisbees. i quickly learned that in the real world people don't appreciate you throwing Frisbees at them, especially ones that don't glow.
Now, as an adult watching the extremely well restored 20 anniversary edition of "TRON" i actually realize that there is some impressive thought that went into that rather clever story line. Digital bits that can only answer yes or no, programs spiritually dedicated to their 'creators', atoms being mapped to be taken apart and later re-assembled, and to top it all off we got to see what Lebowski was like before becoming 'The Dude' and before that guy pissed on his rug. Man, that rug really tied the room together.
Movies that can work on two levels are great: they can appeal to you as a kid and still entertain you as an adult for very different reasons. For that alone you may now frequently see me ending my transmissions with the phrase "END OF LINE".

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things...
Even at the best of times in history it is easy for one to get overwhelmed by things. You never quite have as much money as you would like to have, you never are quite as healthy as you would like to be, your job is never quite as good as it could be. Combine that with the troubling time we live in: at war, declining economy, climate change; and you can easily find yourself very overwhelmed and bogged down.
It is during these times that i need to be reminded about all the beauty in the world. i feel better just knowing that John Frusciante (RHCP) is still alive and walking on the same planet that i am. Knowing that Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, The Byrd, and Charles Mingus made that music they did in the 50's makes me feel lucky to have lived in this country. How can you listen to music and not acknowledge that you have a soul? What other purpose can making music have than to express that which you are feeling, that which is in your soul?
Music saves me on a daily basis. It reminds me of all that is good in this world. It takes a little of the weight off of my heavy heart. Sometimes we just need to be reminded what really keeps us going. That push on a skateboard, that hand written poem, that kiss.
