...Of The Year!

i have seen two of the best movies in their respective genres for the year. One science fiction, the other comedy. i will start in order of viewing.

First is 'Sunshine'. The man who brought you Trainspotting and 28 Days Later has taken a stab at sci-fi. He concurs sci-fi the way he concurred zombie movies. This movie had me within the first five minutes. In one of the first scenes the ship's psychologists discusses the embracing power of light as oppose to the emptiness of darkness.

The purity of dark and cold is one of my favorite concepts. Light is something, a measurable quantity. Heat is something, a measurable quality. Darkness and coldness are a lack of those things, they are not quantities unto themselves. This makes cold and dark pure, the purest condition you can get. Oh, how i digress.

In 'Sunshine' the littlest of details are considered and included. The contraction/expansion of metal as temperature changes, the footwear different characters would choose while traveling on a ship for years, how young males interact with one another, it was extremely well thought out and simultaneously impressed/entertained me.

i also have to admit that i seem to enjoy most movies Cillian Murphy is in.

Movie number two 'Superbad'. This flick was frickin' hilarious. From the man who brought you such things as 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. i've got to admit that the kid who plays George Michael in Arrested Development (Michael Cera) was the main draw for me (can you see a pattern in film selection). He has an amazing delivery with dry humor.

This movie was so funny, and i've seen some funny movies this year. Lines like: that's what they said would happen in health class, just makes this -as teenage boys talk to one another- comedy so damn good. Math class is a good place to meet girls by the way.

i can't recommend you see these two movies enough, and preferably in a theater. Special effects are always better on the big screen and comedies are so better enjoyed when a theater full of people are laughing alongside you.
