i was watching Mike Vallely's Greatest Hits (a clip included below) again this weekend and i got to thinking... fuck security.
Obviously from the skateboarding reference i have a strong distaste for security guards. i have never been a fan of police; thinking of them as uneducated, glorified hall monitors usually on some kind of power trip due to overcompensation for lacking attributes. Bullies in blue suits.
i have been harassed time and time again by them throughout my life and the few times i have actually called on them for help they have done absolutely NOTHING. Security guards are wanna-be cops so they are pretty low on the totem pole. They instill some surficial sense of security to the most scared of our population who believe that their property if being protected (i will refrain from commenting at this time on people who are that attached to their belongings).
But alas, this is not my point. This was just the launching point for my evolution of thought. The idea for a black t-shirt with white lettering saying "FUCK SECURITY" would be an interesting skate shirt but the meaning for me has grown beyond it's literal interpretation. i want to challenge my sense of security in every aspect of my life.
The older we get the more things we find ourselves becoming responsible for. We are responsible for maintaining our finances so that we can be responsible for maintaining our home so that we have a place to live. We are responsible for those finances as well so that we can be responsible for up-keeping our car so that we can be responsible and get to work on time.
We are responsible for doing well at work so that we stay employed so that we can keep our financial security and keep our benefits. We need to keep our benefits so that we can maintain our health and hopefully maintain some physical health security. We also need health security to maintain our job security. All this security and all this responsibility. It all just feeds back on itself.
Little by little we settle in and start to get a bit too comfortable with our perceived sense of security. The safe things in life are never those things you remember, never those things we learn something from, never those things we will remember fondly as we lay on our death bed taking our final breath.
It is in this regard that i am today saying "fuck security". i am not saying to be irresponsible or to be reckless. i just think i need to spend a bit more time again stepping beyond my own security zone in into that 'little uncomfortable' zone. That 'nervous' zone. Even the 'why the fuck did i decide to do this' zone.
Never giving up freedom for security is good advise for both individuals and countries. i hope that both myself and my country can start taking this to heart. When i need a little motivation to help me follow through on this campaign i find this footage useful in energizing me, i hope it also works for you. These frat-boys felt pretty secure in their numbers when picking on a skateboarder. i'm guessing they feel a little differently now. (sorry about the lame music... it was the least annoying one on youtube... i recommend hitting mute)
