Smile For E.D.

Tomorrow (or maybe as you read this today) is Earth Day. Although we are at such a turning point in our society's survival this holiday (if we can call it that... yes we will) really gets almost no attention. What can be done to get this important day the recognition it deserves?

Well, what seems to work for many of the popular holidays is rampant consumerism. That, however, will not quite work for Earth Day. It is, after all, working counter to that philosophy.

How about the day off of work. Now there's a way to get people to keep track of a holiday on their personal calender. The down side is that with the day off people usually load up the family car and drive long distances to enjoy their free time. Again, counter productive.

Alcohol! Alcohol always works. That'll bring in the numbers. Wait... all that extra urination, all that extra flushing, all that food wasted as it gets regurgitated into trashcans and street gutters... maybe that's not such a supportive route towards the cause. Thinking about all the people who don't make it to work after St. Patrick's Day however makes me think we should celebrate Earth Day Eve with alcohol to keep cars off the road for Earth Day. Kind of like how we celebrate all hallow's eve. We could call it Earth Daween or Evearth. i kind of like that.

Maybe Earth Day needs an associated character. The planet that sustains all of our lives doesn't seem to have that "cuddle" factor that Santa or the Easter Bunny has. Maybe a cute cartoon alligator. As my significant other has pointed out, no one has attempted to capitalize on the alligator as a salesman for anything. Sure they would require a bit of a make over but there is potential in that smile. And they are green. i'd name him ED. ED for Earth Day.

Happy Earth Day! Do a little something for old mother gia would ya.
