i prefer not to try and convert people any longer into using more fuel efficient vehicles for the same reason i stopped trying to inform smokers many years ago. The information is out there, everyone has heard it at this point, the only possible outcome is known, so if people continue to delude themselves there is nothing else to do and it will just cause more useless stress on myself. My health and everyone else's will still be influenced by these selfish people but it is out of our control.
But my purpose here in this post is not in anger, it is in another feeling all together.
i thoroughly enjoy researching, particularly when it comes to new technology that may feed into my retarded sense of hope that things can get better. Today that research took me to a new line of hybrid giant suv's that should be on the market soon. Ever hopeful and doe-eyed i searched for information on how they work and what kinds of fuel efficiencies they got.
My research took me to information far worse than the miles per gallon they were reporting. It wasn't the typical towing and skiing/snowfall excuses that got me down, people who tow things 5 times a year and people who take 1 ski trip a season have flogged those excuses to death to justify their daily use of suv's and are nothing but boring and lame. It was something else.
On comment threads for articles about the new systems, the suv defenders had user names like 'nomuslimsallowed' and 'forafreeusa'. Keep in mind that these were not some teenagers posting on MySpace or RateMyTeacher, these are ADULTS. Apparently dependence on foreign oil and labor makes us 'more free', while we apparently have forgotten about or chosen to overlook the wire-tapping, credit card statement reviewing, and holding of suspects for an indefinite amount of time. Free indeed. Also, it appears that we shouldn't try to tell people what kind of vehicles to drive but it is perfectly ok to tell them what religion to follow. i must have missed that Ammendment to the Constitution.
i could rant and rant and rant, and rip these people's small minds apart but these findings didn't make me angry as much as they left me disappointed. None of this was new or all that shocking, i have just lost a little more of my faith in our species.
Although the United States of America seems to be trying extremely hard for the title right now, it is not the worst country on the planet. Seeing these things from the country i call home has caused me to lose a significant part of the faith i once had in the belief that we can take care of ourselves and take care of each other.
To think, just days ago i was so excited to return to US soil only to be reminded today of what the reality of my dream actually was.
