i put in the DVD "American Hardcore" to watch again and before the FBI warning or anything came up the colored rating box that we have all become so familiar with filled the screen. The rating, of course: R. This was not surprising but it served as a great reminder, anything that has anything to do with punk in any way should be "R" rated, otherwise it's not being done right.
i prefer to steer away from putting too many limitations on what gets defined as punk, but whatever you call punk for yourself it should challenge the status quo and that, inevitably, will get you an "R" rating. There is no "G" punk, no "PG" punk, and surely (don't call me Shirley) there is no "PG 13" punk. No sex, no nudity, surprisingly minimal swearing yet still it gets an "R" rating.
There's something to an idea that is so challenging that it gets such a rating. There's a power to that.
